One of the reasons I bought this watch was the really beautiful (IMO) engraving of the name inside the caseback: "Leland S. What is the consensus of the group here? Most of the other forum posts on "Gruen Pentagon" are placed inside the American Pocket Watches forum, for what it's worth. As this watch dates from that period, I think it's an open question as to whether it's an American or a Swiss pocket watch. In my opinion, it's quite fair to say that Gruen's nexus was Cincinnati prior to the company's re-consolidation into the Gruen Watch Company and move to Biel/Bienne in 1923. I am curious as to whether Gruen watches of this vintage are considered to be American or Swiss? Obviously the company had really deep ties to both Switzerland and Cincinnati, and this specific movement was manufactured in Switzerland. Does anyone know what the P8864 case engraving indicates? I'm actually quite happy living with uncertainty on the watch's date: I think 1922 - 1930 is a fine range.

The Wadsworth case serial number looks low to me, compared to other examples I've seen posted in this forum, but I don't think it'd be that helpful in dating this watch. I did see a note in another thread that suggested that Wadsworth did not start manufacturing pentagon cases until 1925, and so maybe it dates from 1925-1930. I love the color, and I'm hunting for a filled white gold chain to accompany it.Īfter some research on Gruen pocket watches, I'm not optimistic on dating beyond 1922 (the patent date stamped inside the caseback) and 1930 (because of a repair note scratched into the case back: "UR 7/24/30 2763x 8x2077"). Even though it's "only" gold filled, this is the first watch of any sort that I've owned that has a precious metal case. I guess I had just assumed that the screws would be heat blued and the ratchet and crown wheels would be unpolished. This is my first pocket watch, and I'm absolutely delighted by it! The dial and case shape are what made me interested in it, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that it has highly polished screws and ratchet and crown wheels. Its movement serial number is 519067, and its Wadsworth case serial number is 358864. I recently acquired a Gruen pentagon pocket watch with a V4 VeriThin movement (17j, adjusted to 8 positions).
